University of Nottingham Ningbo China is seeking to recruit a Research Fellow in Machine Learning and Econometrics

Purpose of role

The Centre for Applied Economics Research @ Ningbo is dedicated to applying cutting-edge machine learning and econometric methods to pressing economic policy questions. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual for a dual role that combines deep, hands-on research with the operational leadership of the Centre’s machine learning laboratory.

This position is ideal for a quantitative PhD graduate in econometrics specializing in machine learning or related field who is not only a talented researcher but also an enabler of science, passionate about building the infrastructure and community that allows policy-relevant research to thrive. The successful candidate will contribute to a vibrant research agenda while ensuring the lab operates as a world-class, efficient, and collaborative resource.

About You

  • PhD in Applied Econometrics, Data Science or Economics with a strong quantitative focus, or a closely related field. OR near to completion of a PhD
  • A strong skill portfolio demonstrating applied experience with:
    • Causal inference/econometrics (e.g., IV, DiD, RDD).
    • Machine learning methods (e.g., ML for prediction, NLP, causal forests, reinforcement learning).
    • Handling large and complex datasets.
  • Expert-level programming in Python or R for data analysis and model implementation.
  • High proficiency with Git for version control. Experience with database querying (e.g., SQL).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex information.
  • Ability to creatively apply relevant research approaches, models, techniques and methods.
  • Ability to assess and organise resource requirements and deploy effectively.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with others, both internally and externally.
  • A clear understanding of research ethics, data security, and confidentiality protocols related to working with sensitive data.
  • Proven project management abilities, impeccable organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks.

Your Remuneration, Benefits and Support

Salary will be within the range of RMB 269,906 to RMB 379,782 per annum depending on skills and experience (salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance). 

The post will initially be offered on a fixed-term outsourced contract with outsource company for a period of 2 years.
