Centre for English Language Education (CELE)

Since the development of the Nottingham Ningbo campus in 2004, the Centre for English Language Education (CELE) has aimed to promote high-quality English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teaching in its structure and support of academic programmes delivered in China. With over 110 academic staff, the CELE operation at UNNC is now one of the largest of its kind in the world and is currently supporting students on UNNC Preliminary Year modules, presessionals, summer schools and in-sessional language and academic skills support programmes.

We are seeking an experienced teacher to join our team as a Teacher of English for Specific Purposes. Teachers of English for Specific Purposes are primarily involved in the design and delivery of a portfolio of ESP, teacher training and outreach programmes offered by CELE at UNNC. The post may also be involved in online teaching delivery and may occasionally necessitate short periods of travel to other areas of China.

Your key responsibilities include:

  • Design and delivery of a portfolio of ESP, teacher training and outreach programmes offered by CELE at UNNC.
  • These include professional English courses such as Business English and Medical English, teacher development programmes for in-service teachers of English, and teaching methodology courses for teachers of all subjects in bilingual and international schools.
  • Delivery of summer school programmes for high school students and IELTS preparation.
  • Teaching contact up to a maximum of 18 hours per week (to agreed standards from a given syllabus) on CELE courses as required.
  • Working week to also include teaching preparation, marking and feedback as required, and other administrative duties relating to teaching.
  • Pastoral and academic care of a bespoke cohort of students (following an established personal tutorial system).
  • Taking part in and contributing to staff development activities consistent with continuous professional development.
  • Effective liaison with the Head of CELE, the Deputy Head of CELE for External Pathways, and other fellow academic staff.

About You

Candidates should have:

  • Completed MA/MSc in TESOL / ELT / Applied Linguistics (or equivalent).
  • Formal Teaching Qualification (if not part of degree), e.g. CAE DELTA, LTCL DipTESOL, PGCE/PGCertEd.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in developing and delivering high quality commercial and/or teacher training programmes to a range of clients.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet administrative/marking deadlines.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development within the field (e.g. appropriate professional memberships; attendance at conferences; publications and presentations).
  • English as a first language or equivalent English language competence, with excellent oral and written presentation skills.
  • Expertise in curriculum, materials and assessment design, plus extensive teaching and professional experience in these areas.

The post will initially be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of three years starting September 2025, though an a different start date can be negotiated for the right candidate. This contract may be extended on an indefinite basis by mutual agreement. The post is located in Ningbo and the contract is with the University of Nottingham Ningbo China.
