The purpose of this role is to provide technical support to Faculty of Science and Engineering, support in oversee the day-to-day running of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry laboratory, allocating resources and providing technical supervision/training in the use of equipment and techniques in the area of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry to relevant staff/students to ensure objectives are met.

The role holder will be responsible for the upkeep of designated teaching and research laboratories as well as the use and maintenance of equipment.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Support the day-to-day teaching and basic research running of the designated Chemical Engineering and Chemistry laboratory, allocating resources to ensure work objectives and standards are met.
  • Utilise technical knowledge and expertise to conceptualise and interpret the requirements of the customer.
  • To conduct fault diagnosis and repair of system/equipment/ apparatus personally or through others in own area of responsibility, as required, and assist on the purchasing of equipment and consumables ensuring the adequate stocks of laboratory supplies and maintaining appropriate records.
  • Monitor Health and Safety in the performance of all duties by assessing the risks of the planned activity and performing the tasks having considered, and acted to secure, the safety of yourself and others.
  • Ensure students and new researchers are trained in techniques and the safe and effective use of system/equipment to ensure compliance with relevant health and safety regulations, including carrying out safety risk assessments and UNNC IT regulation.
  • Assist or train staff and students on the development, design, preparation, assembly and application of equipment, the setting up of experiments.
  • Regular routine equipment maintenance and renewal of software used by Faculty of Science and Engineering.
  • Communicate effectively information/instructions to the department and wider university as required, and ensure the accurate completion of documentation, records and reports in order to comply with research quality standards.
  • Participate in training and staff development events as trainer or trainee as appropriate.
  • Undertake other tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be required.

About You

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering OR proven track record with extensive work experience in a relevant technical or scientific role.
  • An understanding of regulations and procedure governing laboratory work (including Home Department and Health and Safety) and implications of non-compliance of other staff.
  • Computer literate, IT skills including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Mandarin, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex information.
  • Ability to work accurately in order to maintain high standards, with the ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Analytical ability to interpret testing requirements, like (at least one of) FTIR, UV-Vis, HPLC, GCMS, LCMS, SEM, XRD.
  • Ability to lift and move objects as this role will involve basic stock control and equipment management.

Salary will be within the range of 100,720 to 148,808 per annum depending on skills and experience (salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance). 

The post will initially be offered on a fixed term contract with the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China for a period of 3 years starting May 2025. This contract may be extended on an indefinite basis by mutual agreement.
