University of Nottingham Ningbo China is seeking to recruit an Associate Professor in European and International History in School of International Studies

About the Role

The School of International Studies is looking for a talented scholar to integrate our existing strengths in the field of History. This is an open position available to fill starting August 2026. Candidates at Assistant Professor level with credentials to be appointed at a higher level are also encouraged to apply.     

Candidates should have a completed PhD in History by the start date with teaching and research interests in European and International History while demonstrating ability to contribute to the broader interdisciplinarity of international studies. Scholars whose specialisms fall under different chronologies and periods, from antiquity to modern history, are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching speak to the history of European Philosophy and/or the history of the Silk Roads.

Applicants must evidence ability to teach core courses in European History and to go beyond their specialism contributing to the broader teaching in International Studies. Candidates should also be well-positioned to contribute to and/or to convene both surveys such as ‘Roads to Modernity, Europe 1600-1939’ and specialist courses such as ‘The Silk Road: Cultural Interactions and Perceptions’, ‘The History of Political Thought’, and the graduate module ‘Introduction to World History’. The role holder will take responsibility for maintaining high teaching standards and contribute generally to the development of teaching, teaching methods and assessments in International Studies.

An established or growing international research profile in European and International History will be considered essential. Also required is a clear research strategy that has the potential to result in grant capture and world-leading publications. Candidates will be expected to act as principal investigator on major research projects in their field of expertise and identify opportunities for the development of new research projects. An active contribution to the ‘Global Institute for Silk Roads Studies’ and the ‘History Research Group’ will also be expected.

The role holder will participate in the School of International Studies’ organisation, management and strategic planning and will also be expected to contribute to the University’s strategic planning processes. This position will also be expected to carry out administrative duties and represent the School within the University depending on needs and as directed by the Head of School.

Your Remuneration, Benefits and Support
The successful candidate will be offered a fixed-term contract for up to 5 years, which may be extended by mutual agreement. Salary will be within the range of RMB 635,038 to RMB 780,622 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience (salary progression beyond this is subject to performance) and you will have a range of benefits and entitlements, including accommodation allowance, insurances, schooling support, home flight, relocation & repatriation support, and paid annual leave. You may also be offered a range of Chinese talent schemes application opportunities based on individual eligibility at time of application.
