University of Nottingham Ningbo China is seeking to recruit a Mechanical Engineering Technician in the FOSE Technician Team.
The purpose of this role is provide specialist technical support to Faculty of Science and Engineering, plan and oversee the day-to-day running of Mechanical and Material laboratories, allocating resources and providing technical supervision/training in the use of equipment and techniques to relevant staff/students to ensure objectives are met.
The role holder will be responsible for the upkeep of designated teaching and research laboratories as well as the use and maintenance of equipment.
Main responsibilities include:
- Plan and oversee the day to day technical running of the laboratory, allocating resources and providing technical supervision to ensure work objectives and standards are met.
- Monitor Health and Safety in the performance of all duties by assessing the risks of the planned activity and performing the tasks having considered, and acted to secure, the safety of yourself and others.
- Ensure students and new researchers are trained in techniques and the safe and effective use of equipment to ensure compliance with relevant health and safety regulations, including carrying out safety risk assessments.
- Assists in the interpretation of results, managing much more complex or specialist machines/equipment, providing quantitative and qualitative analysis, relevant advising academics and students of the application, techniques, and use of technical/laboratory equipment.
- Utilizes technical knowledge and experience in own area to conceptualize and interpret the requirements of the end users.
- Utilise technical knowledge and expertise to assist in the interpretation of results, providing quantitative and qualitative analysis, advising staff and students of the application, techniques and use of relevant technical/laboratory equipment.
- Maintenance of basic equipment and general housekeeping of laboratory areas. To keep equipment running for research and teaching applications.
- To monitor and control stock levels in the laboratory, provide advice on required components and order as necessary, ensuring that the facilities are kept in good order to enable student and research work to be carried out efficiently.
- To provide quality and timely advice, assist and train staff and students on the development, design, preparation, construction, assembly and application of equipment, the setting up of experiments and/or deployment of particular techniques.
- Communicate effectively information/instructions to the department and wider university as required, and ensure the accurate completion of documentation, records and reports in order to comply with research quality standards.
- Contribute to the development of new or improved methods/techniques/equipment and to undertake further training to develop skills and technique base in Mechanical and Material Engineering.
- Participate in training and staff development events as trainer or trainee as appropriate;
- Maintain appropriate professional development, expertise and awareness;
- Undertake other tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be required.
About You
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical and Material Engineering, plus substantial work experience in a relevant role
- Analytical ability to interpret testing requirements.
- Problem solving skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Mandarin, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex information.
- Good customer relation skills.
- Ability to work accurately in order to maintain high standards, with the ability to work effectively under pressure.
- Ability to build relationships and collaborate with others internally and externally.
- Proven technical experience in relevant Mechanical Engineering techniques and equipment.
- An understanding of internal and external regulations and procedure governing laboratory work (including Home Office and Health and Safety) and implications of non-compliance of other staff.
- Ability to lift and move objects as this role will involve storing and moving consumables and equipment.
- An understanding of internal and external law and regulation, meet legal requirement.
Salary will be within the range of 173,986 to 244,812 per annum depending on skills and experience (salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance).
The post will initially be offered on a fixed term contract with the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China for a period of 3 years starting June 2026.
